Another six months have passed and you’re sitting pretty confident in the dentist’s chair knowing you don’t have a cavity. From using mouthwash every night to flossing, it’s nothing to sweat about. That is, until your x-rays come in and show four rapidly growing wisdom teeth.
When it comes to wisdom teeth removal, you’ve probably seen the aftermath of the infamous procedure – a person being all slobbery and saying stupid things for the whole internet to see.
As fun as they are to watch, when you’re in the position of having your wisdom teeth removed, it can be downright scary not knowing what you’re getting yourself into. Leave your worries behind, baby: We’ve got all the before and after tips to successfully complete your wisdom teeth removal.
Before your surgery
Go on a soft food trip
This might be one of the few times your parents give you the green light for ice cream for dinner. After surgery, you won’t be able to reach for all those delicious, crunchy snacks in your pantry. Make sure you stock up on all kinds of soft foods like mashed potatoes, soup, jelly, and anything that doesn’t require much (or any) chewing.
It is also important to make sure you are getting nutrients during this time to speed up the healing process. Add some fruits and vegetables to your basket to make some delicious power-up smoothies (just remember to eat them with a spoon, ie no straws for a while).
Start drinking pineapple juice
Aside from giving off *such* tropical vibes, this summer fruit is one of those pre-op must-haves. Pineapple has an enzyme called bromelain, which acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. Consuming pineapple juice regularly in the weeks before surgery can actually prevent excessive swelling!
Ask your doctor all your questions
Before the actual removal, you will meet with your oral surgeon to take x-rays and talk about the procedure. Sometimes, your fears or worries about something can come from the unknown – and just not knowing what to expect. Being able to answer some of your concerns or questions before you start can help you settle those worries about the surgery.
After your surgery

Okay, your BFF for the next week is going to be ice. Whether it’s an iced bag of peas, a face sling to hold your ice packs, or an ice roller (just be gentle, your face will hurt), applying it to your face for 15-20 minutes will reduce swelling.
The more pillows, the better
For the first few days, you won’t want to lie in your bed. Propping yourself up with a few pillows will help keep your head and shoulders elevated over your heart—keeping blood from rushing to your head and increasing swelling. A pile of pillows will not only give your room a completely cozy atmosphere, but also prevent you from feeling more pain.
Give yourself time to heal
Rn, you may feel like you are living in a completely different body. From the facial swelling to the overall feeling of pain, it’s okay if you don’t feel better mentally. It’s important to remind yourself that none of this will last forever. Take this downtime to be kind to your body and mind—something as small as watching your favorite show can make a huge difference. The swelling will go down and you’ll be back on track much sooner than you think. Promise.
