With so many options for a quick tweak here and a little lift there, it’s no wonder that many around the world are rushing to beauty treatments in an effort to achieve a certain aesthetic. From breast enhancement to botulinum toxin, the outcome and recovery time can vary, but all of these treatments are often for one reason: appearance.
With Statista revealing that 70% of US consumers are considering some form of cosmetic surgery in 2023, there’s bound to be some regrets about overly full lips or unnecessary nose jobs, but people are slow to admit they’ve made mistakes when it comes to treatments. A woman is now speaking out about her moments of misjudgment in hopes of educating others about the importance of weighing your options before booking.
Marta Mielczarska, a 30-year-old content creator living in Los Angeles, shared a TikTok video detailing five cosmetic treatments she’d undergone — and the reasons she regretted it.
The video has since gone viral, with more than 100,000 views since it was shared in April, as users listened to Mielczarska’s reasoning for why she regrets each treatment.
1. Under Eye Filler
Mielczarska, who was “blessed with giant eye bags,” she turned to under-eye filler as an alternative to fat removal surgery, as she said “nobody cuts me near my eyes.”
Admitting in the video, “I know I’m not the best candidate for [this treatment] because I don’t have hollow eyes’, the filler added more volume to her face, telling her that although she was getting rid of the bags, she felt she ‘just looked very almost bloated’.
Talking to you Newsweekshared Mielczarska “The filler worked, however to achieve the look we also had to put some filler in my cheeks to even out my face, which gave me an overstuffed, puffy look.”
Luckily the filler has naturally thinned out over the years, as she shared, “I don’t think I need to dissolve it because the look I have now after three years is natural and no filler anymore.”
2. Anti-wrinkle injections and Lip Filler
Staying in the category of injectables, Mielczarska admitted, “I’ve had bad botox before in my life. I didn’t find it cute.
“The same goes for lip filler. I found a really good person, but I’ve had really bad lip fillers before.”
Her main regret about these treatments was not the procedures themselves, but the professionals she chose to see, she said. Newsweek“It’s hard because you don’t know until you find out. You always think that people who give injections know what they are doing since it is literally their profession.
“I was looking for cheaper options and that’s not always the best in your face. Now, I have a few trusted places for certain things and I won’t experiment with new ones so I don’t make mistakes again.”
3. Microblading
Another area she wished she had left alone was her eyebrows, as she said in the video: “I did it probably eight years ago, and it was only supposed to last a year, but it’s still there and it’s not going away.
“It just looks really weird and faded. They did a really good job, but still, I wish I’d never had it.”
Talking to you Newsweek, Mielczarska admitted that she was influenced by others when it came to this treatment, as she shared, “Microblading was coming out and I jumped on the bandwagon.
“I also remember being 20 and waking up with friends in the same house and my girlfriend made a comment asking ‘Martha, where are your eyebrows?’ and that made me even more aware.
“At the time I loved the results because I finally had eyebrows, but now they look faded and not so fresh and I don’t want to do them again as the trend has passed. I wasn’t blessed with a lot of eyebrow hair as I’m naturally blonde so I’m still looking for a best solution for rich “modern” eyebrows”.
4. Eyelash extension
Calling it a “severe addiction,” Mielczarska is retiring from her eyelash extensions, even though they’ve been a part of her routine for eight years.
She said Newsweek“They make my life so easy because I wake up and I’m ready to go. I took a little break during COVID because the salons were closed, but I was putting on falsies almost every day, which was super annoying.
“Now, I’m just torn between ease and nature. I want a natural look and I see the videos of girls taking them off and they look absolutely beautiful and so much better without them, but somehow I can’t explain to myself that I’ll look better when I take them off.’
5. Breast implants
After a failed initial surgery, Mielczarska had to go under the knife a second time just a few years later. Upon reflection, she shared that, “I wish I never did and I’m actually thinking about getting a transplant right now.”
She said Newsweek“From what I hear, a lot of surgeons suggest going bigger than you want for your first augmentation because you’ll regret going too small and that’s what I did – which I shouldn’t have.”
“I have quite a small frame and the implants I got the first time looked absolutely ridiculous! I felt that I am the chest and I behind them. They didn’t quite fit my frame or personality.
“Plus, three years later, I had complications—a double bubble, when the implant falls below the pocket creating the double-bubble look—and I hated looking at myself in the mirror.”
After seeking help from a new doctor, she was able to get the results she originally wanted, but still, Mielczarska said, “I couldn’t be happier with the new results, but overall I wish I never had them because looking back perspective I was young and I certainly didn’t need it to feel confident.
“Now I think about having plastic on my body and it doesn’t make me feel good. I don’t know if I’ll be brave enough to remove them completely, but maybe one day!”
Overall, her experiences have made her rethink the way she approaches cosmetic treatments, as she said, “I’m definitely not going to do major treatments again, but focus more on the condition of my skin and smaller things like anti-wrinkle injections.
“All the mistakes I made were because I was young, I didn’t have the money to get good care and proper treatment, and I wasn’t educated enough in this area. Now I know better how to make the right choice and I’ve trusted places that I know don’t will let me make these mistakes again.”
