Buttocks are an area of our body that is highly valued in terms of beauty and body harmony. That is why it has been studied and today there are different techniques that allow both women and men to benefit from this latest trend in plastic surgery.
Dr Rui Lima, a renowned plastic surgeon from Up Clinic, who spoke to The News of Portugal at the HPA Health Alvor Hospital – where the surgeries are also performed in the Algarve – said that these techniques are very common, mainly because they are usually associated with other surgeries.
Making the most of the fat
Buttock augmentation is usually combined with other surgeries to remove fat from other areas of the body. This is because when the patient undergoes surgery to remove excess fat from the abdomen, for example, it is possible to use this fat to fill out the buttocks, making the overall result much more satisfying.
According to Dr. Rui Lima, buttock augmentation will further enhance the results of procedures such as liposuction. “As the person undergoes liposuction, the fat removed from the abdomen, flanks and back can be reused.” In fact, 9 out of 10 Brazilian butt lifts are done in conjunction with other surgeries.
Brazilian butt lift
“Buttock augmentation is the gold standard treatment because it is the most widely used and has the best results. Known as the Brazilian Butt Lift, it is a treatment in which fat is removed from the areas around the buttocks, i.e. the sides, the outside of the thighs or the inner thighs or the abdomen and then that fat is used to fill out the buttocks, filling out the areas where there is less volume,” he said.
According to the doctor, the main goal of this approach is often not only to increase the volume but also to get a better shape, which becomes much more elegant. “Then it depends on the patient herself in terms of the volume. When we do fat therapy, the volumes vary from person to person. Normally, per buttock, we can place 250 to 500 c3 of fat, but it depends on the patient,” he said. added.
It is important to note that out of that 250c3 to 500c3 per buttock, not all fat will survive. Even with the best techniques, which guarantee maximum preservation, only 50 to 60 percent of this fat will survive, the rest of the fat will be reabsorbed by the skin, which means that even with the introduction of 250 c per buttock , the final result is visible three months later, it could be half of that amount.
What if I don’t have enough fat?
Although fat is the best filler for the buttocks, there are also alternative forms when the patient does not have enough fat: prostheses and hyaluronic acid.
According to the doctor, buttock augmentation with prosthetics is only done on people who do not have fat, as the risk of complications is greater compared to fat filling. The advantage of using implants is that they allow more visibility of the buttocks.
Regarding the techniques used, “when implants are placed, the main technique, which I prefer to guarantee a more natural result without complications, is to place the implant inside the gluteal muscle, because if it is on the surface it is very noticeable and if it is deep. down there is always the risk of affecting important tissues.”
If done well, “they’re pretty durable and look great, but again, they have a higher complication rate,” Dr. Rui Lima pointed out.
In some cases, it is possible to combine the two approaches: using fat and implants. This is done when patients have some fat, but there is still some, “We still need the implant, but this time combined with fat. The result is even more natural.” Using fat always makes the end result more natural, which is usually what patients are looking for.
Hyaluronic Acid
In some exceptions, you can also do a treatment with hyaluronic acid, “but I reserve it for small adjustments, not a full augmentation with hyaluronic acid, because the result is not as good. That’s why it is used as a supplement to other techniques. If you are doing a buttock augmentation with hyaluronic acid alone, the result does not compare to a buttock augmentation with fat.”
As with the face, there are many people who prefer to avoid surgery and try something less invasive. However, the doctor says that a Brazilian butt lift is much better, because although it is surgery, the long-term result is not even comparable.
Recovery
The Brazilian Butt Lift itself has an almost painless recovery, but it will always depend on the procedure being performed, which is usually done under general anesthesia for the comfort and safety of the patient.
Usually, after two weeks, the person can resume their normal life. “When I say two weeks, it’s not two weeks in bed. It’s two weeks of recovery during which the patient is advised to move accordingly.”
