A British mother of three has tragically died just days after undergoing bum lift surgery in Brazil. Turkey.
Demi Agoglia, 26, is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest after returning to the clinic in Constantinople for control after surgery.
Relatives said The sun newspaper she was pronounced dead in hospital on Monday after going into cardiac arrest in the taxi on the way to hospital, with her partner Bradley Jones desperately giving her CPR.
Mrs Agoglia, from Salford, Greater Manchester, is believed to have suffered a heart attack caused by a fat embolism after going under the knife last Thursday (January 4).
Her brother Carl, 37, urged others thinking of doing the same not to, telling the paper: ‘It’s tragic what happened. We are just in shock. If anyone is thinking of flying to Turkey for business, I would say don’t! Her boyfriend didn’t want to do it either.
“But she’s 26 and has a mind of her own. Her mom didn’t want to go out either.”
He added: “He’s only 26, he shouldn’t have died. Just don’t do it, it’s so high risk. He should never have done that. He has left three young children.”
The tragic news is the latest in a string of deaths following surgery abroad. In November, the United Kingdom government representatives promised to meet with officials at Turkey to discuss regulations around medical and cosmetic tourism after many civilian deaths abroad.
Melissa Kerr, 31, died at the private Medicana Haznedar Hospital in Istanbul in 2019 during buttock enlargement surgery (Brazilian buttock lift). In September, an inquest heard Mrs Kerr, of Gorleston, Norfolkshe suffered a fatal blood clot that had traveled to her lungs during it Brazilian pool lift surgery (BBL). The research reported that BBL procedures carry the highest risk of all cosmetic surgery procedures.
The BBC previously reported how seven British patients died after weight loss surgery in Turkey.
What is a Brazilian Bum Lift?
Surgery is usually undertaken by People who want a more rounded back.
The procedure involves using the patient’s own fat tissue to increase the buttock area.
A Brazilian Bum Lift is usually done in two steps. The procedure begins with liposuction of a different area, often the abdomen, thighs or back, where there is a greater percentage of fat. The same fat is then injected into the hips and buttocks to improve shape and size.
Why is the Brazilian Bum Lift so dangerous?
Plastic surgeons say the procedure has a higher risk of complications, compared to other surgeries, because of the location of the fat source.
The risk of death from BBL is at least 10 times higher than many other procedures, the NHS says.
Its President American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Peter Rubin, said: “A Brazilian Bum Lift (BBL) uses a technique known as autologous fat transfer or fat grafting, which is a consistently safe procedure.
“But the risk of a BBL is specific to the anatomical area where the fat is injected. As the fat is transferred to the buttock, then surgeons enter anatomical danger zones where there are many blood vessels and it is very easy for the fat to enter the bloodstream and it literally clogs the large blood vessels.”
How much does a Brazilian Bum lift cost in the UK compared to places like Turkey?
The experts say so in the UK on average it can cost between £6,250 and £7,000 or sometimes more if more liposuction is needed to get the desired results.
In Turkey, this cost can be between £1,500 and £2,000, which is why many choose to go abroad. But in the UK, there are strict guidelines about who is suitable for surgery in the first place, as well as strict aftercare guidelines to avoid complications and infections. The UK is thoroughly scrutinized when it comes to cosmetic surgery and, in particular, Brazilian Bum Lifts.
Revised guidelines from the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) now state that injections should not go too deep. According to surgeons, this will help prevent complications such as life-threatening clots.
