TikTokers are documenting their lip augmentation journey in a “watch me get addicted to lip filler” trend, causing concerns among cosmetic industry experts.
In trend, Tik Tok Users post a series of photos revealing what their lips look like at each filler increment — from 0ml to their current fill level.
“The trend of getting addicted to lip fillers on TikTok raises concerns about the potential psychological addiction to cosmetic surgery,” said Liana Sahakyan, registered nurse and co-founder of Laureate Aestheticstells Yahoo’s In The Know.
In such a TikTok, influencer @abbeyyrafle earned over 11 million views when she uploaded her year-long journey through her so-called lip filler addiction.
“Before I say shit, I love the look of fake lips so gtfo.” @abbeyyrafle he captioned the video. More than 5,000 viewers commented on the video, most of whom praised her look at every stage — or credited her with inspiring them to get lip fillers of their own.
“The way I hate needles, but you made me want something so bad,” she wrote @lexaataylorr.
“They really fit you in every size, I thought they each looked great,” she commented @el.aye.d.
According to Sahakyan, some patients may inadvertently fall into a cycle of filler addiction as they pursue the perfect lip look.
“While lip fillers can provide a temporary boost and boost confidence, some individuals may become psychologically dependent on them as a means to improve their self-esteem or address underlying insecurities,” explains Sahakyan.
“This can lead to a cycle of seeking more and more fillers, often striving for an unattainable, unhealthy and unrealistic standard beauty.”
A 2022 study conducted by a market research firm Grand View Research found that the size of the global lip augmentation market was estimated at $6.4 billion — and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.8% from 2023 to 2030.
Another TikTok user, Nicole Kay White (@nicolekay2), shared her own “watch me get addicted to lip filler” video, which she captioned, “Best thing I’ve ever done though!!”
With lip filler it costs between $500 and $1,500 per injection, lip augmentation can be an expensive growth addiction.
However, the cost of injections can vary depending on the type of filler used and the condition in which the injections are given. Metropolitan Skin Cliniclocated in Edina, Minn., breaks down its prices as follows:
-
Juvéderm hyaluronic acid fillers: between $400 and $700 per syringe.
-
Bellafill collagen fillers: up to $1,000 for one syringe.
-
Restylane Silk Hyaluronic Acid Filler: between $400 and $700 per syringe.
According Cleveland Clinic, lip fillers are not permanent. Depending on the patient’s metabolism, the injections generally wear off after 12 to 18 months. “You may need routine treatments to maintain your desired volume,” she says.
Another TikToker who shared her journey of lip filler addiction, Tatiana María (@tatianamarria), was met with some criticism from viewers.
“This is when an injector should start saying, ‘I really don’t think you need more,'” he wrote @supgeemun.
“It’s really sad because you literally had perfect lips,” she commented @halalbbeautie.
According to Sahakyan, it’s up to cosmetic specialists to educate patients about the risks and potential psychological side effects of pursuing lip fillers.
“Professionals in the field stress the importance of understanding one’s motivations for seeking cosmetic treatments and being aware of the potential risks and consequences,” she tells In The Know.
When it comes to warning signs of potential mental addiction, Sahakyan warns patients — and cosmetologists alike — to look out for the following red flags:
-
Constantly dissatisfied with his appearance despite repeated procedures.
-
Feeling anxious or depressed when the effects of the fillers wear off.
-
Ignoring professional advice or exceeding the professional’s recommendations.
“The best advice is to prioritize self-love and self-acceptance, using cosmetic procedures as a tool to enhance your physical beauty rather than relying on them solely for validation,” advises Sahakyan.
