With access to medispas on hold for some and others (reasonably) not comfortable visiting their dermatologists, home facials, tools and gadgets are a sensible solution to maintaining glowing skin. And it’s a good time to incorporate a facial tool into your skin care regimen: lately, the market has been flooded with new professional-grade products that promote cell renewal and smooth skin—giving you the same freshness you would after your departure from a person’s office. We had heard traditions about it Lancer Pro Polish Micro-Dermabrasion Device, created by Beverly Hills dermatologist Harold Lancer, and gave it a whirl to see how it responds to a trip to the esthetician. Here are four W honest opinions and experiences of the editors.

Describe your history with microdermabrasion.
I started microdermabrasion about 15 years ago on a regular basis with Los Angeles-based facialist Cristina Radu, who was referred to me by my friend Shelli Azoff. Cristina is known for her very thorough European skin care concept and microdermabrasion has always been the focus of our facials. I stopped a few years ago—for no other reason than I didn’t have much time to take care of myself. About three years ago, I did a melasma control skin care regimen with Dr. Lancer and regular microdermabrasion were part of the regimen. I was very pleased with the overall results—my skin was smooth and even. What I didn’t care about was after the procedure, I had to be diligent about not going outside, protecting my raw skin like a maniac from any possible sunlight for the next day or two. I am sensitive to light, break out easily, and am prone to melasma, even with sunscreen and a hat. I still loved the microdermabrasion though and preferred to have it but I had to make sure the appointments were later in the day or even at night. which was often impossible to achieve.
Did you have reservations about using the Lancer at home?
To be honest, I had reservations that it wouldn’t be as good as a professional visit to the dermatologist or facial therapist. I was skeptical. What intrigued me, however, was that I could have control over when I wanted to have a treatment on my schedule at home. But I’ve had microdermabrasion so many times before—at the facialist and at Lancer’s—that I wasn’t interested in getting the treatment wrong.
How was using the microdermabrasion tool?
The week before, I made sure to only use really mild cleansers and cover-ups so I wouldn’t have any potential irritation. The tool was easy to assemble. There are three settings. The first setting did nothing for me and I had to go to setting three to really feel like I was in the doctor’s office or in the facial chair. You have to pull your skin up and away like they do in the doctor’s office while wiping these areas. When I was done, I applied my favorite cleansing milk to soothe my skin. I touched my face and felt that familiar soft, smooth feeling. I have to say that no other skin tool makes your skin as smooth as microdermabrasion.
Did you see results? Would you use the Lancer tool in the future?
I saw results, yes. There is a more even tone and my skin is smoother. I would do it again every two to three weeks — at night, of course. Again, there was a huge advantage for me when it came to using it when and where I wanted.

Describe your history with microdermabrasion.
I have had many microdermabrasions in my past, but sparingly and intermittently. I’ve always had a hard time getting back on time for appointments. Most recently, I had a microdermabrasion combined with a facial at Rescue Spa.
Did you have reservations about using the Lancer at home?
None. I have sensitive skin but have never had a problem with the microdermabrasion itself and was thrilled to see the results.
How was using the microdermabrasion tool?
I used Lancer before bed and after washing my face with a gentle, all-natural cleanser. The tool is very easy to use and the instructions are simple (I definitely recommend reading them though). You can choose your intensity level and I found the highest setting was the only one that got results.
I used Lancer’s The Method: Nourish Cream immediately after use — the first time, it burned my skin. It’s an issue I regularly have with many moisturizers, because my skin is extremely dry and sensitive. Someone with less sensitive skin might not have a problem. However, I switched it up during subsequent treatments and used a hyaluronic acid serum afterwards, or a calming toner, followed by a simple moisturizing oil – or if I was feeling extra dry, my favorite Weleda Skin Food.
Did you see results? Would you use the Lancer tool in the future?
Yes! My skin was super smooth afterwards – more than I’ve gotten from any exfoliating scrub. I found that after, my serums were more effective than before and my pores were much more open which made extractions easier. My skin texture felt fresh and regenerated. I honestly don’t plan on buying another exfoliating scrub again as this one does the job so much better and is ultimately much more affordable.

Describe your history with microdermabrasion.
I have never had a microdermabrasion treatment before. However, I was interested in using this tool because of its reported benefits, particularly improved hyperpigmentation and reduced appearance of enlarged pores.
Did you have reservations about using the Lancer at home or was it not a concern?
I had slight reservations about using the Lancer as I am new to microdermabrasion per se. Personally, I found watching tutorials and reading the instructions a few times to be particularly helpful and sorted out any concerns I had.
How was using the microdermabrasion tool?
I’d compare the microdermabrasion tool to a mini skin vacuum — designed to maneuver on both a limited and large scale, covering every inch. I used the Lancer tool during my evening skin routine once I had a clean and fresh base. The tool has multiple settings and I found the highest setting to be the most beneficial for my skin. After using the Lancer tool, I always rinse my face with cold water and apply Augustinus Bader’s cream for best results. I tried using the Lancer: Nourish Cream method, but it left my skin feeling very hot with a stinging sensation. Still, the cream smelled great and would probably work better for someone with less sensitive skin.
Did you see results? Would you use the Lancer tool in the future?
Absolutely! The Lancer device has a guaranteed place in my nightly routine as it leaves my skin consistently soft, clean and even.

Describe your history with microdermabrasion.
Zero story! I just linked it to the exfoliation, which I also wish I knew more about.
Have you had bookings using the Lancer at home?
I wasn’t worried at all until I used it, especially as I read the instruction booklet cover to cover at least twice. But the first few times I opened it, I immediately thought I was doing something wrong. At first, I must have foolishly mistaken the rotary neck spin button for the power button and gave up when it wouldn’t light up. Feeling like a fool, I was more than ready for my next attempt. But the suction was strong enough that I was sure I had made another mistake. After revisiting the instructions – and appreciating how thorough they were – once again, I decided I needed some time before deciding how to proceed.
How was using the microdermabrasion tool?
As mentioned, it was very intense. So you can imagine how confused I was when I found out that people not only used the highest setting, but that it’s also what my colleagues prefer and recommend. Obviously, it wasn’t for me. My skin is very dry and I was worried that my face would get red and raw—especially since I can’t handle a tool with such a strong degree of suction. No matter how tight I hold onto my skin, it occasionally sticks — leaving behind a red mark, as the instructions promise.
Did you see results? Would you use the Lancer tool in the future?
My skin was definitely, and immediately, smoother. But I was right that it became a little red and raw, and therefore stingy, which of course was a major drawback. I’d really like someone to show me how to use it properly, because in my experience, the suggested “sliding” technique just isn’t possible. However, once I find a good lotion and finally re-moisturize, my colleagues’ experiences have convinced me to give it another (careful) try.
