So, thanks to an incredible dentist on TikTok, I’ve now been informed that shaving your teeth down to little sharks isn’t how dentists are meant to do veneers, and I’m bummed.
If, like me, you’ve succumbed to the massive hole that is TikTok, you’ve probably seen plenty of videos of young people showing off their numb teeth followed by another shot of them sporting perfectly white teeth. It’s become somewhat of a trend, titled #veneerscheck and unfortunately I’m still losing sleep over how damned the content of that hashtag is.
Anyway, according to my dear dentist friend Dr Shaadi Manouchehri (@drshaadimanouchehri) are not veneers, they are actually crowns. Unlike veneers, crowns are a highly invasive procedure and can cause many long-term problems (especially for young people).

“First of all, these are not veneers, they are full coverage crowns,” he said in the video.
“Shaving your teeth down to the pegs will damage the nerve and you will need a root canal and extraction at some point in your life.”
Yes, I had a root canal when I was 12 and it was horrible. I ended up biting the dentist’s hand (but, that’s another story).
He continued: “Second point veneers or crowns should be replaced every 10-15 years… they are probably 18/19 years old. Now, she will probably have to replace them 4-5 times in her lifetime.”
“Not only will the financial burden be an issue, but it will also be a biological burden. Because the tooth naturally cannot be prepared and re-prepared every time. So she is a beautiful young lady and has probably ruined her teeth for the rest of her life. She’s probably going to have dentures until she’s 40.
“I personally wouldn’t choose that, would you?”
Dr S Manouchehri also talks about the dangers of shaving your teeth in a previous video posted on TikTok.

Moral of the story here: Don’t get veneers/crowns while you’re young. Invest in braces, teeth whitening kits, whatever. But shaving your teeth down to the pegs is not good for your teeth in the long run.
Now, this is TEA-th.
