Lips have always been one of the most popular areas of care thanks to their ability to balance and harmonize the face, but the emphasis on the area has reached new heights in 2024. “Lips have become a focus that goes beyond aesthetics and almost prevents in a cultural movement,” Physician Associate Cheyanne, CEO and Founder of The private LA suite, it tells me. Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and Top Celebrity Injector Jason B. Diamond confirms that requests for lip augmentation have increased over the past decade, with more and more younger patients seeking lip fillers in recent years.
Aesthetic professionals’ treatment repertoires have now expanded enormously to include regenerative medicine, lasers, new injectables and “smart” active ingredients. The offerings are so extensive that dual board certified plastic surgeon Ben Talley launched a special lip clinic, Cupid lipsin Beverly Hills in February 2024. “There is so much to be done for the lips that a focused and dedicated lip center was necessary to provide patients with all the essential treatments available for the mouth [area],” says Dr. Talei, who is known for the natural results of his surgery Modified Upper Lip Lift technique, which he christens Eros Elevation.
The desired lip aesthetic is even fuller and more defined, yet subtle enough to be believable. “Patients want lip enhancement more than ever, but they don’t want a fuller look,” confirms the board-certified plastic surgeon Mark Mani of Beverly Hills, California. Lip offers within the clinic
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) notes that patients are seeking “longer-lasting” and more “natural-looking” in-office procedures. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Jason Rustayan has seen an upward trend in visits for surgical lip lifts, which permanently reduce the space between the nose and the upper lip (i.e., the philtrum) to reveal more of the pink, mucousy lower lip. The process has been around for fifty years, but the AAFPRS confirms its upward trend over the past several years. Dr. Talei adds that younger patients are also seeking it as a stand-alone procedure as opposed to being an add-on surgery during a facelift.
Regenerative medicine also affects lip aesthetics. Dr. Talley and Dr. Mani use patient-derived, regenerative nanofat to rejuvenate, hydrate and plump their patients’ lips from the inside. Nanofat is derived from a small, purified sample of patient fat, removing any tumor fibers but leaving behind the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) containing regenerative stem cells, growth factors, exosomes and more. Dr. Mani uses anti-aging, skin-strengthening nanofat for the face and lips in the MIST technique, while Dr. Talei combines nanofat with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in what is known as platelet hybridized adipose therapy (PHAT)—or PHAT Lips—for results that last more than a year.
The AAFPRS notes that fill fatigue is a real phenomenon, but it is popular when it occurs naturally and in the hands of the right injector. The clients of Dr. Diamond, many of whom are celebrities, are looking for lip-enhancing results while respecting their natural shape. Medical Esthetician Amy Petersonits founder Skincare by Amy Peterson in Miami, Florida, is also a fan of using Skinvive Low-Density Hyaluronic Filler — which was approved by the US FDA in May 2023 — to create a more diffused, hydrated look on the lips.
In addition to injectables, Peterson offers a heat-based treatment called Liplase at her clinic, a series of six treatments that improve the size and shape of the lips. “Liplase heats the deep layers of the inner and outer lips to create fuller, smoother lips and increase their size and shape without injections,” she explains.
Lip care formulas
Lip care has also become an established step in the skin care regimen. Board Certified Osteopathic Dermatologist Leela Athalye points to TikTok’s viral “lip basting” hack for treating lips with chemical exfoliation (think: low concentrations of glycolic or lactic acid) followed by thick, ultra-soft balms or moisturizers. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Konstantinos Vasiukevich observed over 5.5 million views on TikTok DIY-ing lip care by combining facial serums with hyaluronic acid and peptides with occlusive balms like Aquaphor.
Skin care quality lip masks for full hydration are also becoming more common. Clogging waxes or oils are combined with peptides that plump and strengthen collagen (ie, Maxilip, Volulip, etc.), along with skin care ingredients like ceramides. As proof, the beloved indie brand ANFISA launched AN-GLOSS Ceramide Lip Treatment, $45, in 2024 to rave reviews. Founder Aly Korchemniy tested over 350 lab samples before finalizing a formula containing “VoluLip and MaxiLip, vegan cholesterol, five bio-identical ceramides (ceramide EOP, ceramide NP, ceramide NS, ceramide AS, and ceramide AP), five cold-pressed oils, and soothing Allantoin and Bisbalul”.
With beauty devices on the rise, you can even buy lip-specific red light therapy devices like the CurrentBody Lip Perfector$189, not to mention lip sheet masks like KNESKO Amethyst Hydrate Lip Mask$17.
Lip Trends in Cosmetics
In makeup, get ready for less drying, natural finishes and softer matte textures like hydration Madame Gabriela line or the new launches from Prada Beauty. There will also be plenty of lips coated in smooth gloss, like the new one Armani Beauty Prisma Gloss collection, in 2024.
Celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg says that “metallics and liquid glosses in coral, peach and pastel shades are coming in hot,” while celebrity makeup artist Nadia Hucklin adds that ’90s-inspired chocolate hues and dark brown trims are also included. In terms of technique, the makeup artist Diane Caranica noted “poetic lips” on the runway, citing a blurred edge that suggests a fresh-faced look. This aesthetic is sometimes achieved with blush (but not to be confused with the “lip blushing” trend, which paints the lips with a semi-permanent tattoo).
One thing is certain: lips remain at the center of beauty. Whether one of the above trends trumps the others remains to be seen, but there will be no shortage of inspiration (or options!) when it comes to lip augmentation, treatments or care in 2024.
