Digests cover digital workflows, implants, peri-implantitis
With countless articles published each year in dental journals, keeping up with the latest research can be difficult. Fortunately, the PracticeUpdate Channel Clinical Dentistry is available to assist dentists with heavy lifting.
Supported by the American Dental Association and Elsevier, publisher of The Journal of the American Dental Association, the channel curates the most clinically relevant research in general dentistry and all dental specialties and creates summaries and messages in easy-to-use formats to help busy people dentists to be informed about the latest developments.
In June, the channel launched its Spotlight On series, which groups content around specific areas of interest. The first three analyzes cover digital workflows. implants and implant restorations. and peri-implantitis and implant maintenance. Like the channel, the analyzes are free.
“The purpose of the PracticeUpdate Spotlight On series is to select some of the best evidence on a wide range of clinically relevant topics from the world’s literature,” said Michael Newman, DDS, editor-in-chief of the PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry Channel. “PracticeUpdate provides important, useful and meaningful information to achieve the best outcomes for patients.”
The Spotlight on Restorative and Prosthodontic Digital Workflow — Digital Dentistry, which was sent June 23 to ADA members and other oral health professionals, explains the clinical applications of digital workflows, compares technologies, and discusses the benefits for dental education, clinicians, and patients. For example, he points to a JADA article comparing the effectiveness and treatment outcomes of a digital denture with a conventional denture fabrication method, finding the digital method can reduce clinical and laboratory times and improve the occlusal stability of the final denture.
Donald Curtis, DMD, one of two associate editors of the PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry Channel, said the channel represents the future of how clinicians can use the literature to support clinical decision making.
“Using an online platform like PracticeUpdate to support clinical decision making is relatively new in dentistry, but it is catching on quickly,” said Dr. Curtis. “Already more than 20,000 subscribers benefit from our daily summaries and take-home messages. The platform is easy to use and free.”
The channel’s expert editorial and advisory board reviews every article in the top 100 dental journals, selecting those that are directly relevant to dental practice, and writes the abstracts and take-home messages. Each week, the board also finds recognized global experts and key opinion leaders to write commentary on selected articles.
“PracticeUpdate Spotlight On is a natural extension of our platform development,” said Dr. Curtis. “The number of reviewed and abstracted articles allowed cross-indexing of focused areas of clinical interest.”
The second Spotlight On issue, scheduled for July, highlights new findings on implants and implant restorations, while the third, scheduled for August, provides the most up-to-date clinical guidance on peri-implantitis. All three present emerging trends in clinical dentistry and the editorial board’s efforts to ensure that oral health professionals have easy access to the best research on these trends.
“The goal of the first PracticeUpdate Spotlight On analyzes is to highlight three areas in dentistry that are growing exponentially,” said Satheesh Elangovan, BDS, D.Sc., DMSc., associate editor of the PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry Channel. “In these areas, Spotlight On provides a unique snapshot of recent advances in dentistry in a focused way that would not be available otherwise.”
