Board-certified plastic surgeon Dana Coberly, MD highlights the differences between tummy tuck and liposuction procedures.
TAMPA, FL, USA, May 21, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ — A common insecurity for both men and women is a change in the appearance of the abdominal area over time. Even people who lead a healthy lifestyle may notice a “dog” developing from excess fat and/or loose skin. Dr. Dana Coberly, board certified plastic surgeon in Tampa, says that isolated pockets of fat can develop in various areas of the body, particularly in the abdomen, and may not respond to diet or exercise. In addition, factors such as pregnancy, significant weight loss, the natural aging process, and others can cause sagging, inelastic skin in the abdominal area that also proves unresponsive to fitness and dietary regimens. With this in mind, Dr. Coberly explains that there are two popular surgical procedures capable of addressing these types of cosmetic concerns with results that can effectively improve the contour of the abdomen: abdominoplasty surgery (abdominoplasty) and liposuction. However, he also notes that there are key differences between these two processes that people should keep in mind when considering their options.
Dr. Coberly says the main distinctions between abdominoplasty and liposuction include the techniques used and the specific aesthetic problems the procedures address. While both surgical enhancements can cosmetically improve and re-contour the abdominal area for a more toned physique, patients primarily affected by isolated and persistent fat deposits may benefit more from liposuction, as this procedure focuses on removing fat cells. Liposuction can also address pockets of fat in other areas of the body, including the thighs, buttocks and flanks. The procedure involves a thin cannula inserted through small incisions that suctions out the targeted fat cells. On the other hand, tummy tuck surgery targets excess skin and loose muscles in the waist. The tummy tuck procedure involves removing sagging, excess skin and tightening the remaining skin. Strained or torn abdominal muscles (a condition that often occurs during pregnancy) can also be tightened and repaired.
In general, tummy tuck surgery is designed to address excess skin and muscle laxity, while liposuction focuses on collections of excess fat cells. For those with both conditions—excess fat and skin that causes belly concerns—Dr. Coberly says both liposuction and tummy tuck surgery can be used at the same time to create the best possible results. In fact, Dr. Coberly notes that this is a very common combination of procedures. At her Tampa practice, Coberly Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, Dr. Coberly says the initial consultation process gives her the opportunity to assess each patient’s needs and discuss the procedures and determine if only one or both are recommended to meet their goals. Overall, Dr. Coberly says that people interested in tummy tuck options such as tummy tuck or liposuction should be sure to thoroughly research their options and meet with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon with whom they feel comfortable and confident about approaching care.
