A man bleeding from the head after a hair transplant was arrested along with his wife after they refused to get off a flight in Miami.
Eugenio Hernandez boarded the American Airlines plane to Las Vegas with a bleeding forehead and wrapped in bandages. He said his doctor cleared him to fly and he had paperwork saying so, but flight attendants told him to leave after seeing his bloody head.
The couple refused.
He described what happened when he was released from jail Tuesday night.
“I’m in a lot of pain. I have pain here and pain here in my head,” Hernandez said.
She said she flew from Las Vegas to Miami to get a hair transplant and liposuction. But when he and his wife were on the flight home, he said passengers alerted flight attendants with concerns about his bleeding and medical condition.
“You need to get out because somebody doesn’t like what you have in your head,” Hernandez said he was told.
Hernandez gave NBC6 a paper from his doctor that said he was cleared to fly and return to work without restrictions.
The flight attendant told him she didn’t care, he said.
The situation escalated.
A man has been bailed out of jail after he and his wife were arrested for refusing to get off a plane when flight attendants told him to leave on health grounds. NBC6’s Kim Wynne reports.
“He tells me either get out or I’ll call the police. I said, call the police, because this is unfair. I paid for my flight. I have nothing illegal in my package. Everything is good,” Hernandez said.
His wife, Yusleydis Loyola, who also underwent cosmetic surgery, went live on TikTok while thousands watched.
“You know I have… breast lift, arm fat… I can’t even walk,” Loyola tells the camera in Spanish. “Call 911 … we are being discriminated against and abused.”
The police were called and tried to get the couple off the plane.
“If you don’t get down, they’re going to grab you and pull you over,” an officer tells Hernandez. She stands on the aisle of the plane while he remains seated.
“If they take me off, they’ll hurt me,” he replies.
But things get worse.
The video shows two police officers standing up and putting his hands behind his back. He screams.
Loyola then starts yelling.
“Look, he recently had surgery, he just had surgery!”
The phone vibrates.
“Don’t put my phone down!” he yells at the first officer. “He just had surgery and he’s being beaten!”
Loyola then walks away. She screams and cries, “My chest!”
Police said the pair were arrested for refusing to comply after multiple warnings.
“We believe they were obviously discriminated against because of their appearance after a medical procedure that was necessary,” said the couple’s lawyer, Michael Inglesia.
“They showed this license to the American,” he said. “They went through security without a problem, then American allowed them on the flight and actually gave them priority on the flight to help them and make it more convenient. It was only after other passengers complained about their appearance that they were asked to get off the flight.”
The pair were charged with trespassing and resisting arrest.
“All of this could have been avoided if they had simply followed the officers’ orders or request to evacuate the aircraft,” said Miami-Dade County Police spokesman Argemis Colome.
American Airlines said in a statement: “While boarding American Airlines Flight 1858 on August 19th from Miami (MIA) to Las Vegas (LAS), two customers became disruptive and did not comply with the instructions of crew members . Law enforcement responded and removed both customers from the aircraft. We thank our crew members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
