A disturbing new study reveals a link between mercury vapor released from mercury dental fillings and elevated mercury levels in pregnant women
— Dr. Ted Herrmann, IABDM President
Spring, TEXAS, UNITED STATES, February 16, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ — The International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM) is raising awareness of an alarming new study that reveals an association between mercury vapor released from mercury amalgam dental fillings and elevated mercury levels in pregnant women.
The study, “Estimated Exposure to Mercury Vapor from Amalgams Among American Pregnant Women,” offers surprising information about exposure to mercury vapor from dental amalgams among pregnant women across the United States. Published in the journal Human and Experimental Toxicologyleverages information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) 2015-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset, analyzing mercury in more than 1.6 million pregnant women.
The key findings of the study show that about 36% of the pregnant women studied had at least one dental amalgam. These women showed significantly higher mean daily urinary mercury excretion rates compared to those without amalgams. Alarmingly, a significant proportion of these women were exposed to daily doses of mercury vapor from dental amalgams that exceeded safety limits set by health agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency and the California EPA.
This study highlights a critical public health concern, highlighting the potential risks to fetal and maternal health from prenatal exposure to mercury vapor. The findings are particularly important considering the The FDA’s 2020 update on the dangers of dental amalgam for sensitive groups, including pregnant women, children, people with neurological diseases, reduced kidney function and people with increased sensitivity to mercury.
“The FDA’s warnings about amalgam are inadequate as mercury amalgam dental fillings are a significant health concern, particularly for pregnant women and those of childbearing age,” said Dr. Ted Herman, IABDM President. “Mercury fillings should be banned”
The study calls for immediate attention and action to reevaluate the use of dental amalgams, especially in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and their unborn children. It emphasizes the need for increased awareness among healthcare professionals and the public of the potential dangers of exposure to mercury vapor from dental amalgam fillings.
The study’s authors advocate for further research and change in dental practice policies to mitigate these risks and ensure the safety and well-being of pregnant women.
