PADUCAH — Across the nation, 68 million people have problems getting dental care, according to the director of Kare Mobile, a Louisville-based dental organization that provides accessible dental care to people in need. The clinic stopped in Paducah on Monday.
Some problems people regularly face when trying to get dental care is being under or uninsured, especially when it comes to accessing dental insurance. Also, dental care is more difficult for people who do not live near a dentist.
But on Monday, Kare Mobile partnered with Washington Street Baptist Church in Paducah to bridge the gap for people struggling with these barriers.
It’s Sabrina Winters’ first time at a Kare Mobile clinic and she had some dental work done. “I get[ting] Some teeth came out today honestly, but it’s my birthday so, guess what, I’m happy,” Winters said.
He was also there to take a picture. The dentist at the Kare Mobile Clinic examined her teeth and gave her instructions on what to do next.
“I’m here because I have a hole in my tooth and I was trying to see what I should do. Should I have it extracted, filled or something else,” Winters said.
Winters is one of the few patients who received services at the Kare Mobile Clinic.
The dentist Dr. Whitney James, who is also Kare Mobile’s clinical dental director, said tooth extractions are probably the most common procedure. “Most people don’t come in expecting or wanting to have a tooth extracted, but because of a lack of education and a lack of access, the average person will wait until they have a toothache to provide care rather than go in to prevent pain,” he said. Dr. James.
Dr. James said these procedures can lead to a boost in self-confidence, which will benefit patients like Winters.
“You’d be surprised how many people say, ‘I mean I’ve got a job interview,’ and we think about it in terms of health physically, but psychosocially and psychologically, fixing someone’s tooth can really change their life, so we enjoy being a part of it.” of our work as well,” said Dr. James.
The clinic was held on Monday from 8 A.M. until 4 p.m. and Kare Mobile will be in Paducah every Monday during the month of January except for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Kare Mobile Clinic vans also make stops in Fulton, Madisonville, state and county jails and nursing homes. The clinic accepts Medicaid and most other insurances.
