A man still reeling from pain medication after major dental surgery appeared to momentarily forget what a dog is.
In a video posted on TikTok In August under the handle @famous.ld, LaDavian King can be seen reacting with a mixture of horror and confusion at the sight of his puppy.
The clip was filmed while King was recovering from having his wisdom teeth removed. At the time of writing, the video has been viewed over 14.5 million times, with viewers going into hysterics at King’s response.
Removal of wisdom teeth is quite common. Patients often choose to have them removed because they are painful, affected, or have grown irregularly.
Whatever the reason, their removal will have little long-term effect on the patient. This is because wisdom teeth are now considered by experts to be residual structures due to changes in the human diet and the way we take care of our teeth.
University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Science Line said: “Until very recently, our diet consisted mainly of very coarse food, as well as impurities such as dirt and sand. This roughness would wear down the teeth so significantly that they would take up less space in the jaw.”
The experts added: “Permanent teeth were also often lost at a young age, which would have created more space in the jaw. Because the diet was so coarse and difficult to chew, the jaw itself would have developed into a larger bone due to this constant training. All of these factors would create more space for wisdom teeth when they come in.”
To combat the painful nature of the procedure, patients are given sedatives. In some cases, these will take the form of benzodiazepine-based medications. In even rarer cases, these can impair memory and the ability to think clearly.
This is due to the drug’s effect on neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to confusion, occasional chaos and, in King’s case, blind terror when greeted by your dog.
“What the hell is this?” he can be heard saying in the clip as he looks down by his bed at the dog who came to comfort him.
A friend happily filming the interaction can be heard laughing behind the camera as King walks away from his pet, who seems desperate to come and say hello.
The dog eventually manages to climb onto the bed, prompting King to let out a yelp that soon has his dog fleeing the room.
“I don’t know what dogs are after I’ve had my wisdom teeth removed,” reads a caption on the screen, with King describing the video as “the funniest video ever”.
Viewers seemed to agree. “It’s so little I’m crying,” one user wrote, while another commented: “This is beyond me.” A third posted, “fighting for his life,” while a fourth added: “Because this is the funniest thing ever.”
