In a major breakthrough for those struggling with varicose veins, a quick and effective solution has emerged through modern laser treatments. This non-surgical procedure allows patients to resume their normal activities within a week, marking a major advance in the management of this common condition, according to Dr. Shoaib F Padaria, Director, Department of Vascular Sciences, Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai.
He further explained that in early cases of varicose veins, certain oral medications such as flavonoids can help. Some patients may benefit from the use of compression stockings. But in general, if a patient develops symptoms of varicose veins, it may be necessary to permanently block those leaking veins. In the past, open surgery to remove the veins was the only alternative.
Flavonoids are phytochemical compounds present in many plants, fruits, vegetables and leaves, with potential applications in medicinal chemistry.
Dr. Padaria further informed that varicose veins, often seen as enlarged and twisted leg veins, are now finding a formidable opponent in the form of advanced laser treatments. The procedure, which began in India in 2003, involves a quick 30-minute session where a thin laser wire is inserted into the affected veins, closing them without the need for incisions or stitches. Patients can walk away immediately, experiencing reduced pain and rapid recovery.
Varicose veins, which affect nearly 20% of the elderly population, originate from weakened venous valves. These valves, often inherited or triggered by lifestyle factors such as weight gain, prolonged standing and pregnancy, struggle to cope with increased pressure over time. The condition is progressive and daily activities can worsen its effects. While some people may experience no symptoms, others may experience pain, swelling, leg cramps and skin changes. Over time, complications can occur, including bleeding, skin pigmentation, and the formation of venous ulcers. In severe cases one may even witness a burst vein causing painless but severe bleeding, especially during sleep.
“Amid these challenges, laser therapy stands out as a game changer. Patients have confirmed its effectiveness, reporting reduced pain and a quick return to their routine within a week of the procedure,” informed Dr. Padaria.
“As varicose veins require immediate attention, people experiencing symptoms are urged to consult a specialist venipuncture specialist. Laser therapy offers a modern, effective and minimally invasive approach, providing quick relief and minimizing disruption to daily life. The focus is shifting to affordable and effective solutions, ensuring that people can say goodbye to the discomfort of varicose veins. Therefore, it is important to diagnose varicose veins before they cause serious medical problems. An important medical test called venous Doppler ultrasound is used to find out the leaking valves, the size and number of leaking superficial veins and also the condition of the deep veins of the legs,” he concluded.
