The new biocompatible resins can be used with Form 3B and Form 2 SLA 3D printers to print custom trays, splints and temporary crown and bridge restorations.
Formlabs Dental released three new biocompatible materials for its Form 3B and Form 2 SLA 3D printers. New materials include Custom Tray Resin, Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) and Temporary CB Resin.
The company’s Custom Tray Resin is a rapid printing biocompatible material for custom impression trays, while Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) is the company’s second-generation, long-term biocompatible material for splints and guards. Temporary CB Resin is a tooth-colored resin for 3D printing temporary crown and bridge restorations in four VITA shades.
Formlabs developed Custom Tray Resin and Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) in-house in its FDA-registered, ISO 13485-certified, Class 8-certified cleanroom facility for the development of dental and medical materials. Temporary CB Resin was developed in collaboration with BEGO, a company specializing in prosthetics and implant dentistry.
Resin for custom impression trays
Custom Tray Resin is a biocompatible Class I resin ideal for direct 3D printing of impression trays for implants, dentures, crowns and bridges and other complete trays. Using the resin, users can print full impression trays in less than 1 hour using 200 micron layer heights—which helps reduce work time and enables higher throughput.
According to the company, this resin is its most affordable biocompatible material and currently ships to the United States, Canada, the EU and select other countries.
Color Correcting Resin for Splints
Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) was developed to be highly durable and shatter resistant to create appliances that can more easily withstand daily use and accidental drops from patients. The resin is color corrected to print clear splints that can be polished to high optical clarity and resist discoloration over time.
Because the resin is produced in-house, the company was able to reduce the holding price by 12.5% (may vary by region). Dental LT Clear Resin (V2) is currently shipping to the United States and other select countries.
Temporary Crown and Bridge Restoration Option
Temporary CB Resin is a tooth-colored resin for 3D printing temporary crown and bridge restorations, inlays and veneers. Indicated for bridges of up to seven units and available in four VITA shades, the properties of the resin include the aesthetics desired by patients, with low tendency to aging and discoloration, low plaque accumulation and high comfort due to low sensitivity to cold and heat.
Dentists can use traditional temporary cements to fix restorations produced with CB Temporary Resin for up to 12 months. For optimal aesthetics and performance, the company recommends a stainless steel build platform when printing with temporary CB resin. This build platform is compatible with Form 3B and Form 2, but is not validated for use with other materials.
Temporary CB resin is currently available in the EU and selected other countries.
