Are you experiencing leg veins that won’t go away? Fortunately, procedures have now advanced to the stage where patients can feel little or no pain and healing can be quick in and out of surgery. We talk to two surgeons about everything there is to know about varicose veins and varicose veins, as well as the various varicose veins treatments in Singapore.
Treatment of varicose veins
These abnormally dilated and bulging veins, usually found on the legs but sometimes on the face and other parts of the body, can be frustrating! DR JOHN TAN, Consultant Vascular Surgeon from The Vein Clinic & Surgery, shares some tips.
#1 Common culprits
Although the causes of the disease are not fully understood, it can be caused by prolonged standing at work, multiple pregnancies and situations that cause significant stress on the leg veins. These cause them to stretch and the valves to fail. Also, high heels often restrict the function and circulation of the calf muscles, resulting in spider veins on the legs. Sun exposure is another known culprit for these on the face.
#2 Skip the cream and medication
Varicose veins are a progressive problem that will not go away without proper treatment. No amount of cream or medication can cure it. They can also cause a lot of discomfort – many of Dr Tan’s patients report tired legs and calf cramps. Early treatment is crucial, especially for those with complications caused by bleeding or infection. Patients with ankle ulcers from the disease should also know that treatment is the only path to long-term ulcer healing.
#3 Get the Right Varicose Vein Treatment in Singapore On Time!
Intravenous occlusion techniques are an excellent treatment without the need for surgery, general anesthesia or hospitalization. The procedure involves a thin wire being inserted into the affected vein through a small puncture in the skin and then cauterized with a laser or radio frequency. To seal it, doctors can use medical glue inserted through a small catheter. These modern techniques offer quick and effective relief for varicose veins, allowing patients to resume their normal activities the same or the next day after treatment.

What are the treatments for varicose veins and varicose veins available in Singapore?
Intravenous ablation for varicose veins. In this technique, a laser is inserted into the affected vein and heats it from the inside, causing it to seal. Some bulging varicose veins may also need to be removed. Newer techniques such as adhesive removal or chemical removal are also available. The procedure is performed under sedation, and therefore an overnight stay in the hospital is not necessary. Patients can walk and continue their daily activities, except for exercise. Spider veins, on the other hand, are treated with microsclerotherapy. An irritating drug is injected into the veins, causing them to swell and close. Stubborn spider veins can also be treated with lasers.
How many treatments are required for visible results?
For varicose vein disease, one session is usually all that is needed. For spider veins, however, a second or even third session is often necessary to complete the treatment. In addition, since spider veins are age-related, procedures are necessary every two years. Veins that are sealed usually do not reopen. However, new veins may develop with aging.
How do you prevent problems from reoccurring?
Wear compression socks whenever you are standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Elevate your feet when resting at home. A healthy diet and regular exercise are also very important.
