General dentist Dr Graham Stokes, who is chairman of the MPS Foundation, a global not-for-profit research initiative, will be among this year’s speakers at the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show (BDCDS), which will be held at the National Exhibition Center Birmingham in the UK on May 12 and 13. Having lectured in postgraduate dental education since 1993, Dr Stokes is passionate about providing dental education and will bring his teaching experience to BDCDS this year. Specializing in prosthodontics, occlusion and implant dentistry, Dr Stokes also has a long-standing relationship with the oral health education charity Bridge2Aid, which provides dental education and care to people in some of the world’s most deprived countries.
Dr. Stokes, could you give us an overview of what you will be talking about at BDCDS?
I will present a step-by-step guide to help practitioners provide stable, functional and esthetically pleasing partial dentures for their patients using case examples to show how this is achieved. I want to explore how to decide between the various alternatives available and help my colleagues provide successful partial dentures.
Why do you think this is an important topic to explore?
With an ever-increasing aging population, it is becoming increasingly important for dental professionals to be able to provide effective partial dentures to their patients. I think it is important to review and remind ourselves of the design sequence involved and the importance of good impressions and design in providing removable partial dentures. Clinicians must remember that good partial denture design is essential to ensure that patients receive the quality of care they deserve and that clinicians want to provide.
Who will this talk be useful to and why?
This presentation will be of interest to all dental professionals caring for partially occluded patients. Providing excellent dental care is a team effort. In my experience, when the entire team involved in a patient’s care truly understands and has good knowledge of the subject, the better care the patient receives and the greater satisfaction and appreciation the team experiences.
Aside from your own presentation, what are you looking forward to at this year’s BDCDS?
You never stop learning about dentistry, so I’m looking forward to improving my knowledge as well as meeting like-minded dentists and old friends — especially other Bridge2Aid volunteers!
