Dr. Charles R. Starr

Dr. Charles R. Starr died of natural causes at the care facility where he resided in Seaside, Ore., Nov. 3, 2020.
Charles was born on July 3, 1931 in Gillingham, Wis. He attended Richland Center High School where he ran track. He set several state records and graduated in 1949. Charles attended the University of Wisconsin (1949-1953) on a track scholarship. He went on to medical school at the University of Wisconsin graduating with a medical degree in 1956. Charles did his internship at Madison General Hospital 1956-1957 and general surgery there from 1957-1959. Charles continued his studies in Plastic Surgery at University Hospitals of Madison from 1959 to 1961. Charles’ University of Wisconsin honors include: Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Beta Kappa and Mace. Charles was board certified by the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in May 1966 and by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 1971. Charles was a member of the following medical organizations. The Lipoplasty Society of North America, The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, The American Medical Association, The Oregon Medical Association, The Oregon Medical Society, The Washington County Medical Society, The Clatsop to County Medical Society and The Royal Society of Medicine London, England. Charles was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Charles’ academic positions include: Former Senior Consultant, Department of Plastic Surgery University of Oregon Health Sciences, Former Chief of Plastic Surgery St. Vincent Hospital Portland, Ore Past President of the Oregon Society of Plastic Surgery, Inc.
In addition to his medical achievements and honors, Charles “Charlie” was an avid golfer. He won multiple club championship titles and set course records at both Portland Golf Club and Astoria Golf Club. Charlie’s amateur team was runner-up in the Bob Hope Desert Classic in 1981. His amateur team won the 1982 Bob Hope Desert Classic with a combined score of 63 under par. Charlie was fortunate enough to play with many professionals and famous golfers during these events. These were the highlights of his time in golf over the years.
Dr. Charles R. Starr met the love of his life, Martine L. Gulbrandsen, while she was in nursing school at the University of Wisconsin. The two were married on August 4, 1956. The two spent the rest of their lives together until her death on August 6, 2019.
Charles and Martine adopted and are survived by two children, Peter L. Starr and Christopher C. Starr. his sister, Eleni Saloutos. Peter lives with his wife, Debbie Starr and stepson, Alex Lange in Seaside, Ore. Christopher lives in Bend, Ore., with his girlfriend, Lara Brammer. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Robert Starr. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
There will be no services for Dr. Charles R. Starr. Dr. Starr donated cleft palate surgeries each year to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Any donation to the hospital in his name would be appropriate. There are efforts to continue his legacy with Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for years to come.
